“Photography is the story I fail to put in to words”

- Destin Sparks

I was born in Northumberland in 1998, but despite being raised in urban London, I continue to regularly visit my birth county to gain inspiration and flare for my pieces.

Sport, from a young age, was my main passion and influenced many aspects of my life. I played both lacrosse and netball at county level which were factors in obtaining a sports scholarship at school, whilst lacrosse additionally provided opportunities at national level. Following a skiing accident in 2013, my life was put on hold. The rehabilitation was lengthy, but despite the adversity positives and new adventures blossomed, including my passion for photography and love of film.

The quote above voices what photography and film means to me.  Being behind a camera is like having a power that allows you to express yourself, feelings and emotions in a much better way than words can ever do. I am a very creative person who observes and explores the world in a very personal way. I particularly notice colour, light, patterns and symmetry allowing me to be both inspired and connected to the world’s imagery creating the basis for my creative work.

The work of the Pre-Raphaelite artists additionally draws my inspiration. This brotherhood was founded in 19th century London and were in-turn influenced by the art critic John Ruskin who encouraged the blend of nature within art. Their unique creativity and style resonates throughout all my pieces. Taking portraits within natural settings reminds me of the fragility, strength and beauty of humanity as well as the world we inhabit.

Having worked as a freelance photographer since I left school, I decided to put this on hold to pursue a career in Social Care. Despite this, I continue to take up photographic opportunities wherever possible.
